I’m straying a bit from my usual healthy recipes to take a moment and discuss healthy pet food options.
I am all about making sure my family is eating healthy, and that includes my pets too. If I find it important to do the research, purchase high quality organic products for my parents, boyfriend and friends, it’s equally important that I do the same thing for my 2 year old Weimaraner, Gera.
Before Gera, I had a Weimaraner named Nika, who sadly had to be put down after only 9 years, because she was suffering from kidney failure. We never pinpointed the cause of the disease completely, but my whole family is certain that what made her sick was a series of dog treats that we had been purchasing for her, without even knowing that they could be harmful. After a tremendous amount of research I narrowed it down to Chinese made dog treats that had put her on a downward spiral.
Ever since then I refuse to purchase any dog treats not made in the USA and wholeheartedly only promote dog food and treats that are made with high quality ingredients in the USA.
Just as it is important to make healthy eating decisions as a human, it is your responsibility to make those healthy decisions for you pets. Unfortunately they do not have a strong say in the matter so it is up to us, the pet owners to do what’s best.
What instantly drew me to Freshpet dog food is that is is made in the USA, without any additives or preservatives, nor any pre-processed meat powders, or by products. The food is so fresh it actually needs to be refrigerated at all times. You can’t just stick a bag of this in the garage to sit there for months on end.
It is made with real US meat and real veggies – which you can actually see directly in the bowl.
And as you can see, Gera loves it.
And I’m happy to see that this Freshpet dog food is made with 24 ounces of chicken, 1 ounce of cranberries, 1 ounce of vegetables and 1 ounces of oats. All good wholesome ingredients which I support.
Gera doesn’t just love the food though. He loves the treats too!
I have to say the Dog Joy® Turkey Bacon Dog Joy® Treats look exactly like cooked human grade turkey bacon; if you put that on a plate, nobody would ever know it was a dog treat! So don’t leave those lying out on the breakfast counter! By the enthusiasm on Gera’s face I am sure the Freshpet dog food and treats will appeal to both picky eaters and unstoppable feasting pets.

Look at that face. How could I not make the best feeding decisions for this pup?

Your dog looks lovely. It’s so important to keep dogs healthy, we cook rice for our dog and give her carrots as a treat.

It’s amazing how we obsess over what we eat, but often forget about our pets and just buy whatever is on offer. We have been taking more interest in what we feed our cats.

Exactly!

I’ve just recently had to change my dog’s food because she was scratching constantly and we couldn’t figure out what it was. My vet said she could be allergic to her food so we’re trying a special type for allergies and hope after 3-4 weeks her scratching will be gone. It’s made me think about everything I give her and I’m now looking for healthy treats etc so thanks for sharing this!

I’m so sorry to hear that. I hope the change in diet makes all the difference!
