Thank you to Vacuvita® for sending me a complimentary Vacuvita® One Touch Storage System and offering to host a giveaway on this blog
Minimizing food waste is a huge concern of mine. Since my fridge is fully stocked at all times I need to make a consious effort to make sure I am properly planning out my meals to make sure I can minimize food spoilage.
Sometimes I’m successful at this, other time not so much. A bunch of cilantro or parsley seems to always get lost at the bottom of the vegetable drawer only to be found when it’s well past its prime. I know I’m not the only one with this problem.
Statistically the average household wastes 1300 pounds of food per year – up to $1500 in waste. That number is insane. It hurts my soul to have to throw food away – especially fruits or veggies that have spoiled. I feel like I’m simply disrespecting the Earth and all the labor that went into the growing, watering and nurturing of these plants.
I want to make sure I am getting as much out of my groceries as possible and can keep them fresh for as long as possible.
And that’s where the handy dandy Vacuvita® One Touch Storage System – the first of its kind vacuum and food storage option, comes in. Vacuvita is strongly focused on storing food in a better way — keeping it fresh for up to five times longer, and opening up a new world of storage options. Their motto is to cut back on waste, and that a message I can fully support.
Think of the Vacuvita® as a modern day, high tech, connected bread box. It stores food in a container, the Home Base, to keep it fresher longer. The Home Base then pairs with an easy-to-use vacuum tube to seal food in reusable containers or vacuum seal bags. Vacuvita® also has an app to keep track of everything you have stored and then send reminders of when it will expire. You can use the pre-set reminders or set your own. So you never forget about those strawberries you purchased last week, or the chicken you froze last month.
In addition to storage, you can use your Vacuvita® products to marinate, sous vide and more. Yep, if you forgot to marinate your meat or fish overnight you can use the Vacuvita® to marinate your food in just minutes. I have also always wanted to try sous vide cooking so am super excited to finally be able to do so!
For a few storage tips be sure to:
- When storing bread products in your Home Base, leave it wrapped in paper or plastic
- Do not store both dry and moist foods in Home Base simultaneously.
- Wash, clean and dry fresh fruits and vegetables before vacuum sealing in bags.
- Never store bananas or soft cheese in vacuum. For a list of foods not recommended, as well as guidelines for how to store all recommended foods visit the Vacuvita FAQ page:

Cilantro and parsley keep well in a cup of water covered with a plastic bag! Tip from my daughter who is also big on composting, so I don’t feel all that terrible if I do have to toss something.
