spinach banana smoothie ingredients before being put in a blender

With the cold weather quickly descending upon us, now is the time to get serious about staying healthy! In the summer time it seems fairly easy to keep away those colds and runny noses, but once the leaves start to change colors and the trees go bare, it becomes much more of a challenge to fight off a cold.

I know that nobody likes to be sick, but I have a particularly low tolerance for pesky colds and runny noses. I need to be my full energized self at all times. When I have to be bed ridden and resting all day long I just can’t handle it. I always have a million things I want to do that just laying around and feeling terrible is never on my agenda.

Signature care products from Shaws supermarket

For that reason, the second I start to feel a cold coming on I am all about taking the proper measures to make sure that the cold is out the door in no time. One thing that always helps me are over the counter medications. At my local Shaw’s Supermarkets in the Massachusetts area (where I actually worked in high school) I purchase Signature Care™ Cough Drops Honey Lemon flavor, as well as Signature Care™ Nasal Decongestant Tablets and Signature Care™ Cold/Flu Relief Softgels Daytime so that I can get well as soon as possible. If you’re not familiar with them; the Signature Care products are pharmacist recommended, provide the same quality and relief that national name brands do, but at a better value, and are sold exclusively at Shaw’s Supermarkets as well as all Albertsons Companies family of stores, including Albertsons, Safeway, ACME Markets, Jewel-Osco, Vons, Pavilions, Randalls, Tom Thumb, Star Market, United Supermarkets, Market Street, Albertsons Market and Carrs/Safeway.

Whenever I have a sore throat, honey lemon cough drops are my go to. Honey lemon is the most soothing flavor if you ask me and the least offensive to an aggravated throat. I literally always have cough drops in my purse and never travel without them, because as soon as I feel a cough coming on or any kind of irritation in my throat I grab a cough drop. If you can’t easily make yourself a steaming hot cup of honey lemon tea, the Signature Care cough drops honey lemon flavor is your best bet for soothing that throat.

When my symptoms are even more serious I am all about taking full advantage of over-the-counter cold and flu medicine such as Signature Care Cold/Flu Relief Softgels Daytime. I know plenty of people who are a bit hesitant about taking medicine when they are sick, but I have never been one of them. I am a full believer in using all means possible to get well as quickly as possible and for me this includes proper rest, medicine and the right nutrition packed food and drinks.

And that’s exactly where this superfood spinach banana smoothie comes in.

It is always important to be getting all your daily nutrients, but when you’re sick and your body is fighting off an infection it is even more important to provide the right fuel for the fight.

The one issue with getting those nutrients is that when you are sick you just don’t have the energy to stand in the kitchen preparing a full nutritious meal. In those cases a superfood spinach banana smoothie can save the day, as it is ready in a minute and can be a full breakfast or light meal replacement.

All the O Organics products for the spinach banana smoothie recipe

Since I’m all about purchasing organic whenever possible I was more than pleased to be able to find the ingredients for this spinach banana smoothie at Shaw’s supermarkets in their O Organics® line. The O Organics® line is their higher quality product line that I believe is worth investing in.

Shopping at Shaws supermarket

When I’m sick and have to run to the grocery store I need to be in and out, and luckily for me, I know exactly where everything in the Shaw’s Supermarket is since I used to work there in high school, and the layout has not changed! So whenever I pop in there I know my way around like the back of my hand, with all those high school part time job memories rushing in. If you know your local Shaw’s Supermarkets store as well as I do it shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to grab everything for your get well routine.

Do you microwave the peanut butter before drizzling? Will it work with chunky?

If you heat the peanut butter up a little bit and mix it with some of the nondairy milk or just the oils that have come up to the surface it’s easier to get a nice drizzling consistency! The smoothie will surely work with the chunky peanut butter, though maybe not the drizzle!

OMG! Gotta try! I LOVE SPINACH! Raw, cooked, fresh, canned, frozen…

In the Chicago area, O Organics products are sold at Jewel Food Stores (I believe part of Albertson’s). I get them whenever I can.

I also love their O Organic Old Fashioned oats. One could nuke those with milk alternative and all this fruit, too. Adding ground chia seeds and/or flax seeds.
