Ingredients
  • 2 pounds stew meat cut into 1 inch pieces
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 onions chopped
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
  • 2-3 tablespoons Hungarian paprika
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 3-4 cups water depending on how soupy you want it
  • 4 potatoes peeled and diced
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
  1. Toss beef pieces with 1/2 teaspoon salt and black pepper.
  2. Over medium heat brown onions in the shortening.   Add meat and paprika. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 60-90 minutes.
  3. Add water, potatoes and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Cover and simmer until potatoes are cooked through and meat is soft.
  4. **If you want a thicker goulash mix some cornstarch with 1/4 cup reserved broth, until smooth and add back to the pan.
