Good afternoon,
I admire your blog and your pictures.
I am still struggling with my pictures and I was wondering if you would share some tips.
Do you take you pictures outside? In the shade or sun?
Thank you for your time.
Marie
Thanks! I’m flattered that you’re asking me for some photo tips! I always take photos on my balcony as there is essentially zero natural light in my kitchen. Make sure to take photos in the shade because sunlight will be very harsh on food photos. I usually end up taking photos around 6pm, while there is still natural light outside but no sun shining on my balcony. To get rid of dark shadows using a reflector – a piece of white posterboard opposite the natural light direction. Improving food photography can definitely be a challenge but with a few changes it is definitely possible. In terms of processing I always shoot in RAW mode on my dslr which allows for better photo editing options in Lightroom. Best of luck! Let me know if you have any other questions!
Thank you for your help and good advice.

LOVE your blog!!! I have to ask what camera and lens you use…I just haven’t seen such beautiful and clear photos anywhere like yours. You are truly an excellent food photographer. Great recipes and photos!!!
Thanks so much! I use a canon XSi camera (seems to be the beginners camera in the world of DSLR photography) and a 50 mm prime lens. I started using this camera in March 2011 and got the 50 mm prime lens in Sept 2011. The combination of the camera, lens and lightroom for photo editing has drastically improved my food photography. When I started this blog in Dec 2010 I was using a dinky old canon point and shoot and photographing food indoors with whatever light was available at the time. Now I only shoot in natural light outside on my balcony (I don’t get much natural light in the apartment at all). Thank you so much for all the compliments on the photos! It’s taken a lot of hard work and time but it’s been incredibly rewarding to see my photos start to get better with time. I highly recommend investing in a canon dslr and the 50 mm prime lens is awesome for food photos and is only $50-$100 which is incredibly cheap for a camera lens. Please let me know if you have any other questions – I’d be happy to help! Thanks for stopping by!
Just found your website this morning and found out that you are going to my hometown in September!!! I am very jealous. I am originally form Osaka, Japan. If you have any questions about where to visit (I am sure you got plenty of ideas yourself), let me know!
Hi-I believe you left out the basil in the Julia Child’s Brandade á la Soissonaise recipe…was that on purpose? Thanks!
Hi Lanne, just saw that I left out the step where the basil gets chopped up in the food processor first – thanks for catching that. Recipe has been updated.
