Vegan and Gluten Free Whipped Sweet Potatoes require just a handful of ingredients and make for the perfect fall holiday side dish.
Fall is in full swing and even more so, the holiday spirit. For me that means comfort food, cooking, and fall flavors aka let’s see how many pumpkin, squash and sweet potato recipes I can make before the season ends!
And since I’m currently obsessed with all fall flavors I could not have been more excited to attend a Holland House Cooking Wine event which highlighted the perfect seasonal recipes to make with their cooking wines.
You can find Holland House Cooking Wines in five flavor-boosting varieties – Marsala, Sherry, White, Red and White with Lemon. What to do with cooking wines you ask?
More like what can’t you do?!
You can find quick tips on each Holland House’s label – like replacing 1/3 cup of water with Holland House White Cooking Wine when boiling rice to create a richer and deeper flavor in the finished dish.
Or you can use Holland House Cooking Wines to add a bold boost of flavor to holiday recipes, slow cooker dinners, soups and more. The flavors hold up in high heat and help amp up the flavors in a dish. I mean you can even make a Marsala rosemary brine for your holiday turkey with these cooking wines!

I used to think the Marsala cooking wine was only for making chicken marsala (a dish I have to admit I have never made), but turns out Marsala cooking wine is super versatile and imparts a well-rounded sweet-wine flavor with hints of hazelnut that is ideal for so many different dishes!
At the Holland House Cooking Wine event we used the Holland House Marsala Cooking Wine to make whipped sweet potatoes.
And we used the Holland House Sherry Cooking Wine for a twist on the traditional cranberry sauce also known as the Sherry Triple Berry Cranberry – with the addition of fresh raspberries, blueberries and orange zest too. Now this was a seriously flavorful cranberry sauce, way more alive and vibrant than any I’ve ever had before!
For this recipe we combined sugar with the berries, water, orange zest and Holland House Sherry Cooking Wine.
You can see it all boiling together and breaking down the berries below:
The cranberry sauce truly surprised me; it was refreshingly berry flavored with still maintaining that strong holiday cranberry flavor without being too tart or sweet. I feel like this will be a perfect accompaniment to many dishes at the holiday table, not just turkey. And I may just want to eat this in place of jam with my tea; or would be perfectly in place of jelly on a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for kids!
For the dessert we got to sample Marsala and Dark Chocolate Malted Milk Brownies made with the Holland House Marsala Cooking Wine (has a well-rounded flavor with a hint of hazelnut). For sweet lovers, they will not be able to get enough of these!
But the star of the holiday house party event (for me) was definitely the Marsala Whipped Sweet Potatoes, which I immediately needed to recreate at home with my own vegan spin.
For the vegan whipped sweet potatoes I used sweet potatoes, salt, cinnamon, vegan butter, coconut cream, Holland House Marsala Cooking Wine and toasted walnuts. Just a handful of ingredients required for the perfect holiday side.
First, cube and boil the sweet potatoes until fork tender.
Then, blend them until smooth. Next, add the heated Holland House Marsala Cooking Wine, vegan butter, and cinnamon. I used an immersion blender but a hand mixer would work here too. Add the coconut cream – an optional ingredient for those who are not sensitive to the coconut flavor in coconut cream, and want a bit of a richer whipped sweet potatoes dish.
Garnish with toasted walnut pieces and your whipped sweet potato side dish is ready to serve! This makes for the perfect holiday recipe and I loved the addition of flavor from the Holland House Marsala Cooking Wine. I’m certainly inspired to start cooking more with cooking wines!
