kale smoothie with pears and maca

I’m not normally a kale smoothie for breakfast person. I’m more of a hearty hot sit down meal breakfaster (and yes I just created that word). Think stewed apple walnut chocolate oatmeal bowls, or breakfast egg skillets. That’s normally my style.

But those can be a bit more time consuming to make.

And sometimes you just want your breakfast ready in a flash. I started thinking about hearty liquid smoothie breakfast while visiting my cousin in Canada. She was mentioning how she always opts for a protein shake in the morning instead of a full on chewable meal because it’s so much quick to first throw together, and then consumer.

And I started to realize, maybe she has a good point.

Busy mornings call for quick breakfast options.

kale smoothie with ingredients used to make it - maca powder, kale, pears, bananas

Take my morning today for example. It started with a inbox full of emails which needed responding. Then I took the dog for a run in the woods, and he insisted on running straight into the lake to run, the swim then run again in order to scare off every last swan/duck/bird in the vicinity.

So then naturally once I got home he needed to be toweled off and fed (and scolded).

Next was tending to the chickens, of 4 of the gals needed to be fed and to have their coop cleaned. Not my favorite part of the day.

By the time all of that was over I was ready for breakfast to be in my hands. And so this kale smoothie seemed like a great option. Back in my wisdom tooth recovery days I had made an awesome spinach and pear breakfast smoothie so I knew the leafy greens + pear + banana is a winning combo.

But kale seems to be even more superfoody than spinach so I swapped that out and added in some maca powder as well.

Have you heard of maca? Maca is a Pervuain superfood which goes back in time all the way to the Incan empire. This caffeine-free, plant-based performance enhancer is used to support energy and stamina, as well as a healthy libido. It is also known to help with hormone balance. While being packed full of vitamins and nutrients maca is also an antioxidant booster.

Basically it’s pretty wonderful and magical – just take my word for it. I used to take it in pill form, but the powder is even more convenient since it can be added to smoothies, shakes, juices, etc.

So if you want a quick superfood packed kale smoothie this is the one to go with! Frozen bananas add that creamy ice cream like consistency while the pear adds a gentle hint of sweetness and perfectly balances out the sharp green kale and maca powder.

This smoothie is full of fiber and incredible amount of vitamins A and C.

A feel good way to start the day. Naturally sweetened by the pear and banana, and vegan and gluten-free.

Maca sounds really cool, I’ll have to add some to my smoothies too. I love to add spinach to my smoothies but find kale is juts too strong a flavour for my tastes so I’d swap that out but it looks great!
